Finally, the summer we’ve all been waiting for is here! From Madison Square Garden to the House of Blues, live music venues are opening up everywhere for in-person audiences.
To celebrate the return of live music and to get you ready with the perfect concert outfit, here are 6 multicolor tie dye slides inspired by 6 performers who made both rock music and fashion history.
1. BEST SUMMERTIME EVER WITH JOPLIN AT WOODSTOCK
On August 16, 1969, somewhere between midnight and dawn, rock royalty took the Woodstock stage. Singing an awesome set in front of half a million people, Janis Joplin gave the groove-blues performance of a lifetime.
“Probably the most powerful singer to emerge from the white rock movement”, as TIME magazine put it, Joplin was more than a great artist. She was also a symbol of women’s liberation. A peaceful revolutionary who forged a path for other female performers to take the stage on their own terms. We’re talking Madonna, Lady Gaga and other women whose soulful voices and iconic outfits are now an inseparable part of music and fashion culture.
Joplin’s swagger ran right down to the core. She drove around in her psychedelic Porsche (which Dave Roberts modestly titled “The History of the Universe”) and arrived at Woodstock wearing her unforgettable tie-dyed velvet bell-bottoms and blouse. Our Joplin tie dye slides are a tribute to a woman who taught us the true meaning of freedom, love and rock ‘n’ roll by giving us a piece of her heart.
2. LIVE AT THE BOSTON GARDEN NEVER FELT SO GOOD
Dancing in seizured ecstasy, legs akimbo, sweating like crazy and regularly dropping into splits while delivering pure funk. If anyone could make audiences go wild it was the Godfather of Soul, James Brown. Some say his legendary performance at the Boston Garden was so powerful it helped quell the riots that were cooking up following the Martin Luther King, Jr. assassination in 1968.
Brown set a high standard for live performance both with his trancelike energy and with his iconoclastic fashion sense. His 60s style was precise and full of flamboyance with crisp oxford shirts, bow ties and jet black shades. In the 70s he turned up the heat with an explosion of brightly colored suits, later adding flared trousers, fresh low-cut jumpsuits, oversized capes and statement sunglasses.
These Fireworks Punch tie dye slides is our fiery answer to his timeless head-to-toe flair.
3. THE GREAT GIG IN THE SKY INDEED
Number 3 in our epic concert list may not be a Pink Floyd concert but it is one of our favorite moments in rock history.
In 1973, a then-unknown singer recorded the unforgettable vocals to The Great Gig in the Sky. With no instructions other than “don’t use any words”, Clare Torry took the mic and - pretending she was an instrument - gave one of the most heartbreaking vocal performances ever heard.
Imagine being in the recording studio, standing 20 feet from stardom wearing blue and purple tie dye Cosmic Slides and listening to the mystical sounds of “death and life” fill the room. Chills, literally chills.
4. THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN
The 3 nights of concerts at Madison Square Garden in New York are well-documented in the film, The Song Remains the Same. Still, this is probably one Led Zeppelin concert you really had to be in to know what it felt like.
It’s not just the custom outfits or the crushing set-lists. Those who were there say the band never sounded so explosive. Zeppelin performed with such an extraordinary level of energy that Jimmy Page was so amped up he didn’t sleep during the entire 3-day concert.
In honor of Zeppelin’s brilliant legacy and Page’s confident star-covered moon pants and dragon suit, here are Zeppelin White tie dye slides to wear to your next rock concert.
5. BAREFOOT AT NIRVANA MTV UNPLUGGED IN NEW YORK
If ever there was a moving, vulnerable yet powerful rock performance, it was Nirvana - MTV Unplugged in New York, 1993. That night, Kurt Cobain made it impossible not to fall captive to his charisma as he sang David Bowie’s The Man Who Sold the World or opened those hypnotic blue eyes of his at the peak of Where Did You Sleep Last Night.
Coming to MTV, Nirvana wanted to do something different. And the informal, sit-down performance at candlelight was indeed a night to remember. The entire evening felt like being in the band’s living room, listening to their absolutely mesmerizing jam.
Everything about that performance is peaceful, with Kurt crouched down in a beige cardigan and Pat Smear swinging his bare feet from a high chair while playing a guitar he borrowed from Krist Novoselic.
6. JIMMY HENDRIX SAYS ADIEU: UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN
By the time Jimmy Hendrix took the stage at 9am on Monday, the half a million Woodstock crowd had dwindled down to roughly 40,000 people. “I see that we meet again”, he casually said and began to play the closing performance of the festival, which turned out to be one of the most memorable and legendary performances of the entire decade.
True to his eclectic and colorful style, Hendrix wore a beaded and fringed denim jacket with blue bell bottoms. These psychedelic, multicolor tie dye Hendrix slides are a tribute to one of the most epic rock concerts of all times.
Here’s to a summer full of style and rock ‘n’ roll!
